Do I have to pay capital gains taxes on international investments if I live in the US?

screwed asked:

I am planning on making some investments outside the country (stock market investments). Can I access the profits while living in the US or will I have to pay capital gains taxes on it? If so, how much will I have to pay say for $10,000 in profits?

I am 25 years old and have been working for about a year. I have about 12K in my 401K and some other money in savings.

I have been told to just keep contributing and to not pull out now because of the recession and possible depression.

Any other advice?

Oh and it was a question that was on my test today.

I am looking to buy a few condo units in Orlando to capitalize on the drastically low prices. I was wondering if anyone could offer advice on some good complexes and gated housing communities for small families, young professionals, and people moving into orlando. Please advise with the complexes name and location and why you think it is good. thanks!

Where can I find elementary level info on UK taxes and investments, instead of all the usual verbal diarrhoea?

I’m fed up with tax. And im fed up with trying to understand tax. I’m looking to put away some savings and I read that ISA’s are the best, but trying to understand them is a nightmare. Can anyone direct me to somewhere that can explain taxes and investments in baby language for me, otherwise i’ll lose interest and fall asleep.
